desert dawn, a set on Flickr.sunrise over the desert.
at about 6 in the morning on August 10th, after nearly 10 hours of solid driving along route 40 in the dark, with only truck headlights, jacques cousteau, and a few fireworks for company, we pulled to a stop to watch the sunrise. we’d been driving west from Fort Worth TX, and aiming straight and true for Albuquerque NM when the sky started to lighten behind us. we called a halt. soon the sun was belting down the backs of our shirt collars as we roared through Albuquerque and ononon to Flagstaff AZ. go to our flickr page to see more.

Po Boys Daquiris and sunburns. It’s been a sweaty stint in the deep south. We spent two nights in Panama City, Florida as the A/C was being fixed. We tried to beat the unbearably sticky heat by drinking cheap beer in the swimming pool with pink skinned potbellied old men, splashed in the bathtub warm Gulf of Mexico amongst leathery women held afloat by aftermarket breasts, and retreated to our air conditioned sanctuary of a hotel for a healthy dose of reality TV. Although it was arguably better than being stuck in Casper, we were itchy to leave after a couple of days. Not my idea of a vacation. With our A/C now intermittently blowing bursts of cool air and breathing the outside humidity in on us, we made the haul along the coast to New Orleans. Mitch found us beds at a hostel near the Garden District. We were a short trip away from Bourbon St, where we took advantage of the big easy attitude and enjoyed a good deal of underage drinking. Hand Grenades, Daquiris, and fishbowls of beer fueled the party well into the night, and jazz poured from the doorways all up and down the street. At some point Phoebe reminded us that we had to drive to Texas in the morning, a ten hour trip from New Orleans to Ft Worth. This morning we woke up 30 minutes after check out time(standard fashion), fueled up at a truck stop breakfast buffet, and continued our journey west.

The culture out here is a far cry from California. Some accents we encountered were unintelligible to our untrained ears. Our all American diet of meat and potatoes has been spiced up with a good portion of seafood and the occasional green vegetable. The heat is unlike any I’ve experienced, Phoebe often likens it to the weather of Mumbai. We’ve gone through the muggy bayous of Louisiana and continue towards the deserts of the south west, standing between us and our beloved Pacific coast. As much as the idea of being home and not sweating appeals to us at the moment, we are well settled in our mode of exploration by road. We still have a lot of ground to cover.
